Stress Series

The works in this series range in size from 30 × 30 inches to only a few inches across. They serve as studies that confirm the composition of larger drawings, clarify concepts for sculptural projects, and help determine whether an image warrants development on a larger scale. While primarily functioning as studio studies, many of these small drawings contain intricate close-up details that possess an independent visual interest.

Paradoxically, the process of creating both these detailed studies and the larger Stress Series drawings produces a state of flow that, for me, relieves stress rather than intensifies it.

The Stress Series began as a visual interpretation of familiar verbal expressions that describe emotional and psychological strain. Phrases such as “I’m all tied up in knots,” “I’ve dropped an important ball,” “I can’t see the forest for the trees,” “There are too many paths to choose from,” “I’m drained,” and “Everything is falling in or falling apart” capture the experience of feeling overwhelmed and overcommitted.

These drawings translate those expressions into visual form. Dense, obsessive line work, limited openings of light or escape, and compressed, foreshortened spaces evoke the psychological weight of contemporary life. The viewer is placed within a disorienting environment where movement forward or backward offers little sense of resolution, reflecting the uncertainty and pressure that often accompany the pace of modern living.
